White House Staff Secretary Rob Porter has resigned amid allegations he abused two of his ex-wives. The claims were first reported by the Daily Mail.
Porter said in a statement that the allegations are false. He said he has been transparent and doesn’t want to “further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign.” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during a briefing that Porter resigned on his own accord and was not pressured to do so.
"Rob has been effective in his role as Staff Secretary and the President and Chief of Staff have had full confidence and trust in his abilities and his performance," Sanders said.
The Daily Mail reported the alleged assault happened in December 2010. Jennifer Willoughby, Porter’s second wife, said they got into a fight about something and she left to take a shower. He opened their glass shower door and dragged her by her shoulders to yell at her. Willoughby said when she saw his reaction to it, he released her and apologized.
Porter’s first wife said she left him because he was physically and emotionally abusive. She even sent the Daily Mail images of her injuries after she said Porter punched her in her face, while they were on vacation in Florence, Italy, a couple of years after they got married.
