NBC fired one of its Olympic analysts, Joshua Cooper Ramo, after an on-air comment offended South Koreans. An NBC Sports spokesperson told The Korea Times Ramo could have had more opportunities with NBC, but now that is no longer possible.
During Friday’s opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, Ramo said, "Every Korean will tell you that Japan is a cultural and technological and economic example that has been so important to their own transformation."
Japan occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945. An online petition demanding an apology from Ramo, which has collected thousands of signatures, explains WWII survivors still remember the “inhumane Japanese brutalities.” According to The Korea Times, Japanese rule is “one of the most sensitive political issues for Koreans, who suffered enormously during that period.”
