House Approves Nearly $8 billion in Hurricane Harvey Relief

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a nearly $8 billion Hurricane Harvey disaster aid package in a bipartisan 419-3 vote. The bill is now up for vote in the Senate.

NBC News reports Republican and Democratic lawmakers agreed to attach a three-month debt limit increase and extension of government funding to the relief bill. That way, if passed, the bill will avert a potential government shutdown in September.

The Associated Press reports GOP senators want to attach a longer increase in the debt limit -- until 2019, rather than a short-term one that Democratic leaders want to the relief package.
