The U.S. said it’s looking to impose tariffs on imports of aluminum foil from China, claiming domestic subsidies unfairly disadvantage American producers.
According to a U.S. Commerce Department investigation, Chinese aluminum foil exporters received subsidies of as much as 81 percent. The Commerce Department says it will instruct U.S. Customs and Border Protection to collect cash and deposits from Chinese importers.
In 2016, Chinese aluminum foil imports were valued at an estimated $389 million.
Metal Miner reports the U.S. aluminum industry says they support the Commerce Department’s ruling.
