Israeli Officers Laid to Rest After Being Killed by Gunmen at Jerusalem Mosque

Two Israeli police officers killed in a terrorist attack outside a Jerusalem mosque were laid to rest Friday afternoon, reports The Jerusalem Post.

The attack happened Friday morning, when three Arab citizens of Israel armed with guns shot and killed two Israeli police officers at the al-Aqsa mosque compound. The gunmen were then chased and shot and killed by security forces.

Fox News reports the Jerusalem police commissioner said the gunmen were well prepared -- they stayed at the compound overnight and marked their targets in advance.

The mosque is a sacred site for both Muslims and Jews and, according to The Washington Post, has been the site for clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces.

The Jerusalem Post reports the United Nations Secretary-General said the attack has “the potential to ignite further violence."
