4 Shot in Republican Baseball Practice by Lone Gunman

A gunman opened fired at a park in Alexandria, Virginia, wounding five people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, as Republican lawmakers practiced for a congressional baseball game Wednesday morning. The lone gunman -- who has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man from Illinois -- was killed in a shootout with police.

Multiple media outlets report a Facebook page appearing to have belonged to Hodgkinson paints a picture of an American strongly opposed to President Trump. His apparent Facebook page is filled with anti-Trump rhetoric and images.

At the same time, Hodgkinson was a huge supporter of former Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders. After learning Hodgkinson volunteered for his presidential campaign, Sanders released a statement that reads in part, “I am sickened by this despicable act...Real change can only come about through nonviolent action.”
