Want an excuse to indulge in some chocolate? A new study finds regularly eating a moderate amount of chocolate can lower your risk of developing an irregular heartbeat.
Published in the journal Heart, the study says while there has been extensive research showing the cardiovascular benefits of consuming chocolate, there hasn’t been much done on chocolate and atrial fibrillation, which is linked to a higher risk of stroke and heart failure.
Researchers found a-fib is 10 percent lower for people who ate 1 to 3 servings per month, 20 percent lower for people who ate 2 to 6 servings per week and 16 percent lower for people who ate one or more servings per day. A serving of chocolate in the study was equal to an ounce.
The study didn’t differentiate between dark or milk chocolate.
