Tesla will start taking orders for solar roof tiles Wednesday afternoon CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter. He said they can be ordered for about any country and and will be shipped out in the U.S. this year, overseas next year.
Musk said the solar roof tiles will be black smooth glass and textured at first. Tuscan and French slate options will be available for order in about six months.
According to the Tesla website, the panels are invisible to the naked eye on the street, but from above they are fully exposed to the sun.
The pre-order deposits will cost you $1,000. Musk says the tiles will go for about $42 per square foot, but the typical homeowner can expect to pay just under $22 per square foot after energy savings are calculated.
