Iraqi Forces Take Back Control of Mosul Airport From ISIS

U.S.-backed Iraqi forces have taken back control of the Mosul airport.

Reuters reports police and an interior ministry unit drove Humvees flying Iraqi flags into the perimeter of the airport. In the process, Iraqi forces destroyed ISIS car bombs and motorcycles. CNN reports ISIS has held the airport since 2014 and has destroyed most of its infrastructure.

CNN also reporting the airport is located on land in Mosul that is an important target for Iraqi forces since it is an access point from the southwest of the country.

The Iraqi forces have also taken control of nearby villages and an ISIS weapons storage warehouse.
