Michael Slager, a white former North Carolina police officer, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2015 killing of unarmed black man Walter Scott. A witness captured the shooting on his cell phone camera, which went viral.
U.S. District Judge David Norton ruled that Slager committed second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. Slager’s sentence comes after he pleaded guilty to violating Scott’s civil rights. Slager was an officer with the North Charleston Police Department when he shot and killed Scott. The witness video that surfaced appeared to show Slager shooting Scott in the back as he ran from the officer.
