The Department of Justice is threatening a lawsuit against Harvard University over its investigation into whether the college’s admission policies discriminate against Asian Americans.
In a letter, first obtained and reported by the Wall Street Journal, the Justice Department said Harvard is stonewalling the DOJ’s efforts to investigate the college’s potential violation of civil rights. According to the Wall Street Journal, the document request comes from a civil rights lawsuit filed in 2014 that alleges Harvard limits the number of Asian-Americans it admits each year.
The letter goes on to say Harvard is “not complying” and “challenged” the authority of the DOJ by failing to provide requested documents.
The Justice Department will give Harvard until Dec. 1 to comply with their original Oct. 19 document request. If Harvard fails to provide those documents, the Department of Justice will file a lawsuit against Harvard.
