Comedian Bill Cosby has been sued by Judy Huth, who claims that Cosby sexually assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in 1974. The lawsuit was filed December 2, 2014 in Los Angeles.
This is the first legal action against Cosby arising out of the many allegations against him that have surfaced. Although the statute of limitations precludes any criminal charges in California for the alleged molestation, a civil suit can proceed if Huth can prove emotional distress as a result of Cosby’s alleged actions.
New York criminal defense attorney Elizabeth Kase says that, in one sense, this case could actually be of benefit to Cosby. “[The allegations have] been reduced to process.” Kase points out that there are rules of evidence and conduct that must be followed in a court of law. Cosby is urging that the lawsuit be dismissed.
