Study Backs Pancreas Cell Transplants for Severe Diabetes

New research published in the journal Diabetes Care on Monday revealed how transplants of insulin-producing pancreas cells can protect people with severe type one diabetes from dangerous drops in blood sugar. Type one diabetes patients with even the best of care can lose the ability to sense and acknowledge the warning signs that their blood sugar is dropping to deadly levels. The study found that the with the insulin-producing cells present, patients can restore their blood sugar awareness and control their diabetes.

This type of therapy, however, has only been offered in the US through research studies although it is already used in other countries. These new findings will hopefully lead to a licensing of the therapy.
